Dental sealants are ultra-thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). They seal out food and bacteria from deep grooves, stopping cavities before they start. Applied by dentists in minutes, sealants are clear or tooth-colored, ADA-approved, and proven effective for children and adults at risk of decay.
They are one of the most effective ways to keep teeth cavity-free, especially for kids, because they act as a physical barrier between harmful bacteria and your tooth’s vulnerable surfaces. The process is quick, non-invasive, and requires no needles, drilling, or anesthesia. For many families, sealants represent an investment in long-term oral health and freedom from cavities.
Cavities most often form in the deep pits and grooves of molars, where toothbrushes can’t reach. Even the most careful brushers can miss these spots, leading to tooth decay, pain, and expensive dental work. Sealants act as a “safety net” against cavities by blocking out bacteria and food.
Untreated decay leads to pain, infection, and potential tooth loss. A single cavity may require a dental filling, which can weaken the tooth structure. Multiple cavities mean multiple fillings, crowns, or root canals, which are expensive, time-consuming procedures that could have been prevented.
Dental sealants are best for:
Sealants can be placed as soon as molars come in for optimal protection. Not sure if dental sealants are right for you? Dr. Varma will check your teeth and discuss the best timing for your checkup.

We make prevention easy and comfortable for your family:
Your visit starts with the gentle cleaning and drying of the tooth. Dr. Varma or a trained dental hygienist examines the grooves for early decay. We take this time to answer questions and explain exactly what we’re doing, especially important if this is your child’s first sealant appointment.
A special etching solution is gently applied to the chewing surface of the tooth. This chemical prepares the enamel, allowing the sealant to bond more strongly. The solution feels cool but causes no pain. After a brief application time, the tooth is thoroughly rinsed and dried with compressed air.
The sealant resin is carefully applied to the prepared tooth surface, flowing into all grooves and pits. We use only the highest-quality dental-grade materials. The process is quick, quiet, and entirely painless. Children often feel nothing more than gentle pressure.
Once applied, the sealant hardens instantly with a special blue curing light. The light takes just a few seconds to set the material permanently. We will check your bite to ensure the sealant feels comfortable and doesn’t interfere with normal chewing.
| When | Timeline | What to Expect | What to Do |
| Immediately | First 24 hours | Slight “tall” feeling; sensation fades quickly | Eat/drink normally; no restrictions; continue daily activities |
| Daily | Ongoing | Teeth function normally; the sealant is invisible | Brush 2x, floss 1x daily; maintain normal hygiene |
| Check-ups | Every 6 months | We will check the sealant wear and condition | Schedule routine appointments; report any damage |
| Longevity | 3–10 years | Sealants last for years with proper care | Avoid hard-chewing objects; maintain good habits |
| Replacement | As needed | Reapplication is quick and painless if wear occurs | Contact the office to schedule resealing when needed |
Sealants set and protect immediately after application. With regular checkups and good daily care, your sealants will protect your teeth for 3–10 years. If they wear away, reapplication is quick, painless, and often covered by insurance. Many patients receive new sealants multiple times throughout their lives, maintaining continuous protection.
Dental sealants are among the most affordable ways to prevent cavities. Most dental insurances (PPO) cover sealants fully or partially for children and teens. For adults, coverage depends on the plan, but the out-of-pocket cost per tooth is far less than a dental filling or dental crown.
Investing in sealants means fewer cavities, less pain, and big savings over a lifetime, especially for families with kids.

Yes. Sealants are ADA-approved, long-studied, and completely safe for children, even young kids. They’ve been used successfully for decades to prevent cavities.
Most sealants last 3–10 years with regular checkups. Dr. Varma reviews their condition at each visit and can easily reapply if any loss occurs.
No. Placing a sealant is quick, gentle, and pain-free. No shots or drilling are needed—just a clean, dry tooth and a few minutes of careful application.
No. While most often recommended for children, adults at risk for decay or with deep grooves can also benefit from sealants.
Usually yes, especially for children and teens under most PPO policies. If not, our office provides affordable options and will clarify coverage for you.
Sealants work on teeth with no cavities or very early signs of decay. If you’ve had dental fillings, we may still protect untouched teeth with sealants to prevent new decay.
At your cleaning, Dr. Varma examines molars for deep grooves. He’ll recommend sealants if they’re at risk, often at ages 6, 12, or whenever permanent molars erupt.
